Let me just throw this out there for consideration. (Simply ignore this if my contribution proves incorrect.) To wit:
CUSTOMS in the country I currently reside in often open boxes and handle items. And sometimes - sometimes, mind you - there are reported incidents of items mysteriously vanishing.
