As far as I can tell, there are 3 Kobo specific plugins for calibre. I have all three of them (KoboUtilities, KoboTouchExtended and Kobo Books) installed though I only use two of them.

Yes, you can have issues with them such as setting a specific device and then wondering why the configuration for that device is not working for all your Kobo ereaders or the well documented issues with the KoboTouchExtended driver a few months back.

I have used Kobo ereaders since the original non-WiFi unit and have had issues with some USB ports over the decade but nothing that matches what you had happening to you. That is why it would have been nice if you were able to give specifics of your system setup, installed software, etc. As it is, you've given the equivalent of asking an auto shop to diagnose your vehicle based on "it makes a funny noise once in a while".
