I have been caught by this. The problem is when the devices and apps sync the reading status.

For the devices, they try to sync when you start or stop reading. That can be open or close a book the status will be synced. It should also sync when you put the device to sleep when reading or wake it later.

For the apps, I'm not quite sure when they sync the reading status. They should sync when you open or close a book. But, I'm not sure about other times. I don't know if the apps will sync when you swapped to another app, or closed the cover of the tablet/phone.

Playing with this with the iPad app and one of my devices, it does seem to work as above. I opened a book on the ereader, went to chapter one and closed it. Then opened it on the iPad, and it went to chapter one. Then I went to chapter two and closed it. Opening it on he ereader went to chapter 1, but after a few seconds showed the "reading elsewhere" prompt and I could accept or reject the new location. I tried a few combinations of opening/closing the book, or closing the covers on both the ereader and iPad. They all seemed to trigger the status sync to the server.

I think I missed one or two status syncs. But, I might have done something in the wrong order. Or the connection didn't work that time. There might also be some delays or minimum time between syncs involved. It needs to handle what happens if you are reading on both devices at the same time. Or the clocks not being perfectly synced. My impression is that the status sync works if there is a little bit of time between the actions.
