Not entirely true. It can depend on which device you are using and how it is being used.
Most people on MR don't use screen protectors because they are reading on dedicated ereading devices, not note taking devices. If you are simply swiping pages to read, then, no, a screen protector is not necessary.
Some people on eink note taking devices do not use screen protectors because the model which they have uses a glass screen which is not so prone to scratching from simple note taking. Others don't take enough notes to make it much of an issue.
However, on some eink note taking devices with a plastic screen, scratches were a significant issue. Indeed, there is a rather lengthy thread devoted to the issue:

I don't know if that issue has been resolved on more recent iterations of those devices. I applied a screen protector to my Note as a precaution. I also happened to notice some very slight scratches on it. I did not apply a screen protector to my Nova Pro or my Note Pro because they have glass screens.
