That said, in the case of a reset, since you would be side-loading books anyway, that necessarily means you'd have a computer with you. If you had saved the instructions locally, you could go through the process of tricking the Kobo into thinking you'd completed registration (if I recall correctly, it's as simple as using the command line to insert a row into a sqlite3 database table). That would give you the ability to read side-loaded books without registering.

It's not a big deal, but a little annoying.
I usually don't bring a laptop when hiking or sailing, so I store a backup of thing on my phone or usb memory. Then I use an OTG cable so I can plug in memory, reader etc to the phone.
