If you mean that you need to reinstall KOReader after a firmware update, then that is expected and probably unavoidable.
If you mean that your Kobo setup is reset and you need to login to you Kobo account again, then that is different. It shouldn't be happening, and it doesn't happen here. I am fairly sure that it means something else is wrong. For example, it could be a sign that the database on the device was badly corrupt. Then, when the device was rebooted as part of the update, the database could not be read and the setup gets triggered. There are probably other circumstances where this could happen, but, that's the simplest.
As to the patches, the usefulness is up to you. I don't use them. But, there are people who will not update the firmware until all the patches are done. You need to look at them and decide for yourself.
