That said, in the case of a reset, since you would be side-loading books anyway, that necessarily means you'd have a computer with you. If you had saved the instructions locally, you could go through the process of tricking the Kobo into thinking you'd completed registration (if I recall correctly, it's as simple as using the command line to insert a row into a sqlite3 database table). That would give you the ability to read side-loaded books without registering.
Or keep a copy of the database from the device and restore it when needed. It will need some catch-up for the books added or removed, but, it should work.
