Yeah, that just sounds like a shot battery.
There's a lot of posts on the Kindle forums at Amazon complaining about the batteries not holding a charge for long after several months, so a new battery should help it.
Also there's no need to be plugged in to use the wireless. It drains the battery quickly, but you're not going to lose half the battery to buy a couple books or download your daily papers etc. Just turn it back off after doing so.
Nothing wrong with plugging in, but there's no need to do so. You should still get several hours with normal wireless usage (i.e. strong signal and not constantly downloading stuff for hours).
