If I increase AO3's slow_down_sleep_time to 10 seconds, I found I can update about ~50 fics at a time without getting errors, although it's very slow. Would suggest using background metadata for this. (Using email to fetch the updates would be easier, but setting it up has proven to be some trouble.)
