OTA update binaries have identifiers indicating what devices they're for and there's a checksum verifying the package hasn't been corrupted. On up to date firmware (>5.8.7.x), there's also a version check to make sure you're installing same firmware version or higher than the one currently on device.

Failing the checks results in an error message and the update.bin file being deleted with no harm done to your Kindle.
