Rebuilding the database from scratch isn't too big a deal except I've got half my library on my kobo and it takes about a half hour to scan and rebuild the database. I'd much rather restore it if I can just to avoid the delay.
It is annoying either way though if I forgot to back up my reading positions. I'd do that automatically but it takes too long, so I do it manually when I know there are big changes.
