I have absolutely no idea. I don't use them. I don't remember any stability issues with either of them. The safest is probably the "Invert screen" option via the developers mode, or even safer via the config option. That is built into firmware by Kobo. There is just different ways to turn it on which include Nickelmenu
As the the hack, I have never heard of an issue with it, except for configuring the way to turn it on. And, the last version of it was actually modified and built by a Kobo developer to add changes for newer hardware and firmware.
The choice probably comes down to how comfortable you are with the installation methods, and how you want to turn it on and off.
