Android 6 may be adequate for now, but will it be adequate in two years time? App development and versions march on. There will assuredly come a time when an app comes out that someone would want to run, but requires higher than 6. Not upgrading an Android OS puts a shelf-life on a device. This is particularly galling when the producer won't supply the upgrade, despite promising it, AND worst of all, will not release the source which they are required to by law, and which would allow the community to produce the upgrade themselves.

Really, the more I think about this, the less I like Onyx's policies. They are breaking the law and letting down many of their buyers. I understand Remarkable has released sources, and the community is developing for it. Yes, this is a good reason to look elsewhere in future. I'm not sure I want to support Onyx's illegal policies.
