Here in the US we had or have these booklets or pamphlets, Cliff's Notes, that students can use for an English class when they haven't read or finished the book; it gives a summary of the plot, character descriptions, etc. To me that's what a movie typically is, a Cliff's Notes version of the book since so much has to be left out in order for it to fit within 2 hours or whatever. Therefore a movie is very unlikely to cover all of the stuff that the book does, giving us instead the most interesting stuff.

In that regard I'd say that big "tome" books are good candidates. For example, Lord of the Rings was an enjoyable series of movies. And although I'm not a fan of the Harry Potter books, the movies were reasonably entertaining, although I didn't see the final one or two.
