Amazon needs to get over itself and let us place PDF's and docs directly on the Kindle we paid for! I wouldn't mind buying their books in that case, but I am reluctant to support them while they have this attitude. Yes, I have bought 3 paid books since my Kindle arrived, but that number might be higher if they would get rid of some of the idiotic concepts about ownership of private files.
You don't have to send files to Amazon to be converted. There are tons of free options for convert files to Mobi format which will work just fine on the Kindle and you can transfer via USB.
