This morning I realised that I hadn't heard so I contacted them again via the chat facility. I was told that the request for a replacement had been denied. I commented that they could have told me that without me needing to contact them again and was offered a full refund of the purchase cost of the Spot when I returned it using the return label they sent me.
I'm quite happy with that and I'm thinking I'll replace the Spot with a Dot with a clock (it's used as a bedside clock/alarm) which is quite a bit cheaper than a new Spot.

That sounds like a much better settlement than getting someone else's returned, discontinued Spot as a replacement. Amazon is well known to replace items with returns, and even refurbs on occasion, even when the replaced item is still being offered. The Spot of course has been discontinued and replaced with the Show 5, and it too has issues, albeit mostly FW related, but it is rather deaf. I think you made a good choice to go with the Dot + Clock. It should be easy to read in a dark room without being too bright.
