Here's a follow-up.
I restarted the Kindle, but no change. On the managing content page in a web browser, the two ebooks show up as books. On the Kindle, they are listed as comics. I contacted custserv and had mixed results. The first rep didn't listen to me well and assumed it was a user issue. After a long pointless conversation, I requested escalation, and she disconnected the conversation. The second rep understood the problem instantly, asked for me to email photos of my Kindle's screen, and escalated the matter to the relevant department.

So it's a database error. However, I still would like to know if I could recategorize a comic as a book on the Kindle. I'm thinking, "No", but I thought I'd ask here just in case I was missing something.
