And that's what it comes down to. One way likely isn't really better than the other, except in certain edge cases.

once i know what's on page 467,468, or go down a few 466,465 etc. it can stay like that for quite sometime, and even if i do read some other books and mix things up it still gives me a rough idea what's on page 467 or thereabouts.
both ways do the job. i prefer the long established go to page number, others will no doubt prefer the new scrollbar. the solution as i've already mentioned in an earlier post is to have both. it seems to me that Kobo make some changes for changes sake.
edit. for me the new firmware doesn't have any must-haves, the older firmware and therefore the tiled home screen does.
