I seem to remember my very first cell phone had a pressure-touch system, but those didn't last long at all. They were replaced by infrared and capacitive touch screens.

Eink screens are made entirely differently than phone screens if you're thinking that since your phone can withstand pressure, so should your ereader. Phone screens can take quite a bit of abuse, as can tablets. But as already said, eink screens are more fragile and will break if flexed even slightly from uneven pressure anywhere on the screen or any twisting motion.
