If you are looking at Mac, also have a look at Ubuntu or other major Linux distributions. I've been using it for 8 years, with far less problems than I ever had on Windows. The current desktops are very stable and intuitive; you no longer have to be a geek to do just about all you want to. The learning curve is really very low, and nobody is trying to lock you into their specific ecosystem. The amount of open source software available is just amazing. And if you're after hardware as well, give System76 a look, for some really robust Linux machines.
