I know that people with your request tend to not like this answer, but I've said it before and I'll say it again: if one of your primary uses is to read scientific PDFs, and another is to read comics, I strongly, strongly suggest getting a tablet.
If you insist on e-ink, you're gonna need a much bigger budget than you would need with a tablet.
None of the other 'distractions' or 'clutter' on a tablet matter. Turn off whatever you don't want to use. Delete apps you don't want, or move them to a different screen. Disconnect from wifi. You control the device, it doesn't control you.
