The text in those photos is really small for display on a six-inch device (IMHO). I haven't used such a small font so personally haven't noticed the screen texture shown in the images.
I agree that the screen is fairly dark without frontlight, but I don't have another PB reader to compare it to, just various devices with additional Wacom screens (and in one case glass too) and compared to them it's only a little bit darker.
