People certainly wrote about it on mobileread. One instance was when there was a big change for Chinese fonts.
It's probably specific to non-Western (at least ja/zh_*, Thai, and probably some Indic?) fonts, because, well, they're huge and pretty much incompressible and including them in the firmware image proper would make it massively larger (we're often talking 50MiB+ per font): the thought of embedding them in books is faintly horrifying. Also, they change relatively frequently, because in many of the languages that use these fonts, new words means new characters means a new font. Given that hardly anyone reads *all* these languages and would want *all* those fonts, downloading them OTA at need and upgrading them only if they've already been downloaded seems the best solution.

(So, no, you won't have seen this unless you read one of the languages affected. Not all fonts are the same!)
