Don't know if this has been mentioned, but a rudamentary search in this thread didn't reveal anything.
In the e-book viewer, after marking word(s), resizing the marked area by pulling the start handle beyond the end handle, or end handle beyond the start handle, the handles disappear.
So to reproduce:
Mark a single word in the middle of a sentence
Click and hold the right handle
Move it to the left, beyond the left handle
Both handles should now disappear.
