Middlegame and The Ten Thousand Doors of January sound the best to me, but that's just from reading the synopsis rather than having read the books.

I'm not sure why you are throwing politically correct into the mix. A Memory Called Empire sounds like your typical Hugo winner and I'd wager if you didn't know Arkady is a woman, you wouldn't have a gripe about it.
