Don't convert to ePub. Use the KindleUnpack plugin to format shift from KF8 to ePub. Then load the ePub in the editor and use epubcheck (if you don't have it, you can download the plugin) and check for errors. Fix the errors and then see how the ePub came out. What I do when I check for errors is check with both the Calibre error checker and epubcheck. I make sure both say no errors.
Then you can check the ePub and see how it looks. It should be as close to the KF8 as possible.
