Mostly he writes historical fiction, weaving characters and narrative into historical events.
If you'd like to try them out, try "Sharpe's Tiger: The Siege of Seringapatam, 1799", which is the chronologically first in the Sharpe series (although not the first published).
I've really enjoyed all the books of his that I've read.
