Back when Kindles were first introduced, before Amazon offered any family account sharing, you do what they called the account shuffle. You would register to one account, download your books, then deregister that Kindle, and register it to another account, and download the books.

So you ended up with books from different accounts on the Kindle. (This never worked for Fire tablets.)

Now, with current Kindles, that same account shuffle doesn't work. Now, if you deregister a Kindle, all Amazon content is removed. But now Amazon offers Family Share, (or whatever it's called) so people in the same household can share books from two different accounts.

That account shuffle was even explained by Kindle CS, when users asked support about sharing books. Instructions were even shared on the old Kindle forum by Mods and those involved in the old Kindle Pro program.
