Also, for large values of "recent" pretty much all Verizon phones do GSM, and Verizon even has roaming agreements with GSM carriers.
Or the perhaps more likely explanation is that I'm wrong.

I'm sure it was 3g, I used it to download a book to my phone when we took a break so that my dog could play in the brook for a while.
