As to ssh, after I installed and configured USBnetworking, ssh over USB just worked. I put the USBnetworking IP address for my voyage in my computer's /etc/hosts and
ssh root@voyage gets me in.

windows is too complicated and difficult for me to use, so I have no idea how to get putty working.
