This was discussed recently in either the Kobo forum or one of the Kobo/kepub plugin threads. There might have been a version of the plugins that did this, but, the latest released don't seem to. But, my experience with this is that any time I have seen it in the kepub version, the spaces were missing in the original version. If that isn't the case, we'd need to see a example to see what is going wrong.
