Maybe check with Amazon customer service? They might have more information, and they should be able to confirm it was Amazon who requested the change.

Amazon has asked me to type in a code they sent by email from time to time, but never to change a password.
If they want to you to change the pw because they think something dodgy is going on, you might want to check your transactions. Just to make sure you are the only person using your account ....
