And I'm detected again but I didn't do anything directly. I don't know if this will help anyone but I was trying to connect my kinde through a Thunderbolt dock -> usb 3 hub -> kindle OR directly through USB-C -> usb-mini cable. Both of these methods had the Kindle show in Finder just fine.
I went and pulled my Macbook off the dock to try the resetting of the SMC and had to stop to take care of something first. This disconnect, reconnect did something because all of a sudden Calibre is seeing my Kindle even though it's not connection through the dock... wierd.

Nothing shows up in the debug log referring to any devices (e.g. USB devices on system: does not appear in my debug log at all). I have gone and checked items in the troubleshooting sticky post.
