ASIN's probably the incorrect term. Amazon identifier is more accurate. Anything sent to the Kindle cloud gets assigned an Amazon identifier. I expect this identifier is what Amazon uses to store and sync collections and last read position.

I've tried it before and the identifier of the MOBI I sent (regardless if it's old format or dual) is different from the one assigned to it once it's on Amazon's cloud. If I then copy the Kindle cloud downloaded file to other Kindles via USB, collections and reading location get synced.
