I ran epubcheck on a few books that have the invalid font. Results varied. The invalid font is smaller in byte size than the valid version is. But in the cases where the font is invalid, the page it's used on displays fine, exactly as when the font is valid. Maybe it's an intentional subset of characters to keep the .opf smaller that, for whatever reason, triggers the error.

It's fine for my purposes. Nothing's amiss in the reading. But it's an interesting curiosity.
