I just recently started using publisher defaults. And it wasn't as bad as it used to be. Probably because ereaders are now 300 ppi with frontlights, it is easier to pull off the overly thin, spindly serif fonts that are usually chosen.

But seriously do these typesetters ever look at how it reads?? Looking at the typical mmpb I would say the answer is a solid no. It is really remarkable how much money publishers claim for so little effort invested on their part.

My "favorite" horrible mistake was an ebook having the font color set to brown. It rendered on my Kobo as a light grey I did not uncover the problem until I went into Calibre to snoop around and fix it. That was only a couple of years ago btw.
