Yep, the memory management in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 is nearly non-existent and better labeled as “memory mismanagement”. iPadOS 13 also has some serious keyboard/typing issues that absolutely have to get fixed in 14.

I’ve been toying with the idea of replacing it with a Mac Mini for better integration with my iOS devices. I was checking prices yesterday and was reminded why I don’t own Macs. RAM and SSD upgrade costs are insane and it’s either impossible or extremely difficult to do aftermarket upgrades.

Mac Mini was $1799 for the config I want (quad-core, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD). A quad-core NUC with 32GB RAM and high-end 1TB NVMe SSD would just be $700 ($800 with Windows 10 Pro). Of course, the Mac Mini’s better but the NUC will serve my needs just as well. For $1000 savings, I can continue living without better iOS integration.
I’ve been a Mac fan on and off since 1985, but I’ve never had a top of the line model because I’m opposed to robbing banks! For a few years in the 1990s when Jobs was out of the company Apple licensed the hardware to 3rd party vendors, but Jobs cancelled the licensing after he staged a coup and regained control. The 3rd party Macs were better and more affordable than the crap Apple was building then, plus the old Mac OS was aged and useless. I lived in Austin then, and we had several 3rd party Mac hardware companies there turning out awesome machines, but they all went bankrupt after Jobs screwed them over. Thankfully Jobs did see how antiquated Mac OS had become and he got that issue corrected, but prices went through the roof again. The older Mac Minis were great, but the new ones aren’t a good value at all. BTW, none of my Macs or iThingies have USB-C. I can’t afford those. I doubt I will ever buy another Mac as they are just too darn expensive. I’ll likely have to go back to a Win 10 computer in the future, and that makes me sad.
