What seems to work the best is to leave 3G on and connected to a charger. It will eventually set the time using the 3G connection, but might take quite a few days.

The wrong clock time keeps it from communicating with amazon.

If you haven't used it for over 3 years or so, it needs a firmware update that you need to download from amazon.
