Unless Kobo reverted to their previous model of '1-page = x words'. Words can be counted once up front and are a pretty good metric for judging 'how long is this book?'.
As far as I recall Kobo stores words-per-chapter variable in its database. I'd assumed they used it for estimating time remaining, but I don't know.
Anyway, just think of the 'fun' to be had arguing the best value for words-per-page or the best way to count words.
