Honestly, I don't understand why sideloaded fonts don't have advanced features by default. The decision mystifies me.

It has been explained before. The built-in fonts have been modified to work properly when doing this. And Kobo are the people who added the coded needed to do this to Qt. But, there is no guarantee that it will work with other fonts. It might not have changed just because it hasn't been important enough, but, if it doesn't work, then it is a problem. And the support issues can be enough of a reason not to enable it for all fonts.
