Date is the date the Record was created in the Library (could even be an 'empty book' )
Last_modified is the date ANY data base entry for that book changes,

If you really need/want this to remain under YOUR control, you should create a custom column. I do this for Finished (reading) and Edited (when I clean, tweak and Validate ) YMMV
