Unless the files are huge, I'd just use the merge tool to make them into one, if that's what you want in the target book. (Select all the files, right-click, merge). You likely got multiple files based on header styles plus conversion settings...something like that.
I suggested the renaming just to give the file a nice identity. I find it hard to keep track of dozens of "index-something-something" files if I have to move them around. The actual name isn't important, just make it something you can easily keep track of.
