I am happy to report some progress with this. I applied black wet-erase marker (Vis-a-Vis) directly to the lightest portions of the screen, then smeared it across thoroughly using a slightly damp cloth. The result is not perfectly even, but it is more even than before.
More importantly, the dark and light patches are now distributed throughout the screen rather than there being one huge dark patch. Before, I found that my eye would naturally come to rest on the "bruise of suck" as I scanned across each line, disrupting my reading. The unevenness that now exists emphatically does not.
Moreover, the process is completely reversible, at least in the short term. (I am hoping that over time, the pigments will leach into the screen so that I will not have to redo the process if I get the screen wet.) All in all, I recommend this method to anyone who is troubled by uneven lighting on their Kobo Forma or Kobo Libra.
