Probably because, as has been stated, the features they prioritize as most important are on the Kindle while the features they would also like can be achieved through jailbreaking. This is not a hard concept to grasp. We all want different features and we want them to varying levels.

I’d love it if Kobo dropped the sub 8” lines and produced a Forma 2 which improved the lighting, had a base 32gb storage with SD card, used USB C, I could go on. However there are people who would hate that device even though they may like Kobos software. Neither I nor these hypothetical people would agree on all the hardware specs. And none of us would be wrong for getting the device we felt best fit our needs.
