I'm the opposite. I don't need to know what is on the device. I can always look. Grab the device and look, or plug it in. Then send anything I now want on the device. And the occasional factory reset, or new device, lets me do a cleanup.
I automate this with the Reading List plugin. I have a reading list for each device. When I get a new book, I add it to the lists for the devices I want it on. When I connect the device, the books are sent to the device. That means that each device has the books that are supposed to be on it, so there is no need to track what is on them.
For moving to a new device, I already get the reading status from the device to my library. After sending the books to the new device and have it process the books, I send the reading status for those that need it. Which is basically those that are being read. I don't normally send finished books to the new device.
