Good point: if I'm already making a mobi for the USB Kindle, I could also do the email trick.

The Files app is still a bit wonky. You basically wind up "sharing" the book into the reader of choice, so you wind up with multiple copies: 1 in icloud, one in private storage of the epub reader. Still, good callout: I wonder if any of the ereader apps would just use a folder in icloud Drive so one less thing to manage...
