Note 2 suddenly not recognized by Windows?

Is the following a known problem? I hooked up a new Note 2 to a Windows 10 desktop a few times. Everytime the computer saw the deviced, as did Calibre, and I managed to upload a mass of epubs to the device, several times.

Then I left it plugged in a while to get it fully charged.
But now whenever I unplug and plug it back in, Windows doesn't seem to recognize it (nor does Calibre, of course).

I've tried switching on usb debugging (which was off to begin with, when it worked), but that doesn't seem to help.

The device makes a little sound when I plug it in, but my computer doesn't. Anybody know what might cause this? And is it a frequent occurrence with this device?
