As promised in the GFN thread I did some tests with a fresh install of Portable and no optional plugins ==>>

I created a new Library - 'ΩLast Library'
Added an empty book - 'Book One' by 'Better Red'
Using F2 edit I prepended an 'Ω' to the Author name and got this error
Spoiler:
calibre, version 4.17.0
ERROR: Failed to set data: Could not set data, click Show Details to see why.

At this point I had two Author folders 'Better Red' and 'OBetter Red', in each there was a metadata.opf (which are NOT identical), and a hardlink to the same epub file.
With the 'Book One' by 'ΩBetter Red' book line current, I added another Empty book - with default value for Author - 'ΩBetter Red', and Title 'Book Two'. This time I did not get an error
**, and there is only one Book Two folder, in the 'OBetter Red' Author folder.
I did all that again, with the same result. I'm attaching the library as a zip.
Reminder - the epubs in 'Better Red/Book One' and 'OBetter Red/Book One' are hard links to the same data stream on my NTFS drive. That won't be apparent when the ΩLast.zip is unpacked, but you should see they have the same modified timestamps.

TdeM - this was what led me to think it was GFN. Yesterday, between adding the first book then changing the Author to "ΩBet…". and adding a second book for that Author I removed GFN - sorry about the garden path.
