I've discovered yet another "trick" to speed up the process, and probably the last one.
It seems if you call a 3rd party app via nav ball from neoreader, once you are in the 3rd party app and do a back, it takes you back to neoreader. So no reason to go via the home screen.
So the probably final process is:
from neoreader: click navball, click 3rd party app.
from 3rd party: click back.
The process is now just 3 clicks! WHOOSH.
