I've been using Thunderbird since late 2003 or early 2004 instead of Eudora. I forget what I used before Eudora. The two main IT companies I worked in always replaced Outlook on customer PCs, unless Outlook in MS Office was required for an on-site Exchange server for meetings.
IMAP vs. Pop3 is not the GMail issue with Outlook. Thunderbird is configured for IMAP with GMail and it's working properly. Besides, having all the email locally and not left on the server is a really bad iea (IMHO).
